One of the primary uses of Adobe Photoshop users is editing or enhancing Photos. This can be from quick touch-up to major changes in the photo. One of the quickest ways to accomplish this is using 3D Models. 3D Models allow you to adjust the perspective, lighting, colors, textures easily, whereas building in 2D does not.
In this video I turn Jewels the Cat into…da-da-da-da…Rocket Cat. You will have to see how easy this was to do using the 3DVIA for Adobe Photoshop Plugin.
I used two nice models from 3DVIA in this video: Special thanks to Dipsy for the Rocket and Mbiasotti for the Goggles.
Along with the video, here are the steps I used to turn Jewels into “Rocket Cat”:
1. Download the 3DVIA Plugin for Photoshop
2. Choose: File -> Import -> Search 3DVIA…
3. Search for “rocket”, then Select Import
4. Copy and paste the Rocket into your photo. the easiest way to do this is by dragging the model with the Move tool onto the photo.
5. Adjust the Rocket into place using the 3D Tools (I suggest using the “Advanced 3D” workspace)
6. Adjust the lighting for the Rocket using the Lighting tools under the 3D menu. I simply selected one of the Infinite Lights, and adjusted the Lights using the Rotate the Light tool.
7. Move the 3D Rocket layer behind the original photo layer by dragging the layer down in the Layers toolbar.
8. Search again for “goggles” using the 3DVIA Search plugin. Import the goggles.
9. Again: copy and paste the goggles onto the photo. You should now have three layers: Top: Goggles, Middle: Photo, Bottom: Rocket.
10. Adjust the position, scale and rotation of the goggles over the photo using the 3D tools.
11. To make the goggle glass transparent, we need to locate the glass object in the goggles 3D object. From the 3D sidebar, find the glass material. The easiest way to do this is to cut off visibility in every layer, until the glass is invisible. Depending on the 3D model you use, the materials list can be longer or shorter.
12. With the glass Material selected, change the Opacity value of the glass. I used 36%.
13. Once the 3D models are in place we can rasterize the 3D models into 2D by selecting: Layer -> Rasterize -> 3D. Do this for both the rocket and the goggles layers.
14. Use the erase tool to remove the strap on the goggles, so it appears behind the cat.
15. Remove the background around the cat to reveal the rocket. I used the magic wand tool to select the background, then selected Delete, however you may know other ways to accomplish this.
16. I also added a fourth layer background of a starfield to place behind everything.
17. Add text if you want here.
Please send us pictures that you have made using 3D models from 3DVIA and Photoshop. We will add them to our Flickr account, Facebook, etc.

it wont let me make an acount!!!!
Were you trying to create an account within the Photoshop Plugin, or on 3dvia.com?

..So it only takes 3 minutes, (when you remove a bunch of bits from the video… notice the lasso part, particularly sloppy) But yeh, no offence, I don't see how this is in any way an improvement over just using photoshop? Furthermore, if I wanted to get a 3d model into photoshop, I can just take a screenshot in say, 3ds max (with white bg) and paste straight in..? like 5 seconds instead of the minutes (minimum) it takes to do it this way. And free transform = easier to use than your 3d object manipulation tool by a loooot and does most of the same things.. btw link to photoshop plugin is broken, shows a 404 error.

Fixed the link-thanks for the notification…few things were broken during the recent redesign.
Taking a screenshot is another way to create 3D content, however, adjusting the 3D model within Photoshop would be easier than having to go back and forth to 3ds max, and for those without expensive 3D software, this is a quick option within Photoshop. I will have another video on this soon.
you could just torrent the expensive 3D software?
